    2017 COMMITTEES OF THE SAUGEEN SHORES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

    The Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce is a volunteer based organization in which members sit on various committees that explore and address issues of importance to the local business community. Chamber staff assists in facilitation and carrying out the plans made by committees that are approved by the full Board. All committees report to the Board. Ad Hoc committees are formed as needed. Chamber members in good standing are encouraged to join a committee of interest to them. 

  • Management Committee - Mandated in our bylaws 7.1. There shall be a Manager Committee composed of the immediate Past President, President of the Board, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and may include a Director at Large should one be appointed by the Board. In emergencies and between regular meetings of the Board of Directors the Management  Committee shall act on behalf of the Board of Directors.

    Economic Development Committee/Advocacy - The Economic Development Advisory Committee will make recommendations to Council on matters that will foster and enhance quality of life and prosperity in our community. The Committee will consolidate and coordinate activities related to the enhancement and refurbishment of the urban cores of Southampton and Port Elgin. It advises Council on the development of policy and programs related to the economic vitality with a view to enhancing prosperity through coordinated public investment, fostering private development and retention of existing jobs. In addition, it shall ensure there is coordination of marketing and tourism development initiatives that attract visitors to the community among those undertaking these tasks for the Town of Saugeen Shores. The Committee also provides oversight for the Town's participation in the County of Bruce's Spruce the Bruce program.

    Membership Committee - This Committee mandate is to increase and retain membership for the Chamber of Commerce. They will execute events, programs and strategies that could include educational sessions and social functions that address the needs and wants of its members. Part of this will include increasing awareness to both the members and general public of what the Chamber does and its' purpose and achievements. Some of these functions may include:

    • Annual General Meeting - Spring
    • Member Apprecation BBQ - Summer
    • GM & Christmas Social
    • Mayor's breakfast/lunch
    • Hosting education and or training sessions for business owners, ie smart serve, social media classes
    • Social events such as golf, curling, trade shows, etc. should they be deemed appropriate


    Marketing/Tourism Committee -  The Marketing and Tourism Committee is tasked with creating a yearly marketing plan for the Chamber of Commerce. This plan will include timelines as well as a budget, approved by the Board of Directors. The focus is to market Saugeen Shores as a tourist destination, both summer and year round, for the benefit of its members. Some of these initiatives will include:

    • Chamber newsletter and e-blasts
    • Managing the Chamber Website
    • Social Media Plan
    • Shop Local/Christmas promotions/Christmas parades
    • Co-ordinate other downtown initiatives (some with BIA's)
    • Executing and circulating the Experience Guide
    • Printing and circulating maps, community information
    • Overseeing the Trolley


    Business After Hours Committee - This committee arranges a monthly networking function hosted at a Chamber members' businesses. It is held the third Thursday of each month from September until May from 5pm-7pm (excluding December which is the Christmas social). Committee members scout out and arrange for local businesses to host the event and showcase their business. They assist in organizing sponsors and co-hosts, door prizes, as well as advertise the event. 

    BRASS Awards Committee - This is one of the flagship events held yearly in late May or early June to recognize businesses and members in Saugeen Shores. It is the Business Recognition Awards of Saugeen Shores or BRASS. Nominations begin in January of each year for 5-6 chosen categories, followed by judging, and a gala event showcasing the winners. A silent and live auction is also held as a Chamber fundraiser. The committee runs from November until June organizing and executing this event.  

    Pumpkinfest Committee - Responsible for planning and executing all aspects of Pumpkinfest for Saugeen Shores. Pumpkinfest is one of the largest festivals in the area, held the weekend before Thanksgiving and drawing upwards of 50,000 people. The committee reevaluates this festival yearly to determine necessary changes for growth and sustaining this grand festival. There are many arms including a car show, food events and more.
